Quick Winter Car Maintenance Checklist

Winter can be tough on your car, but a little maintenance goes a long way. Follow these quick tips to keep your car running smoothly and safely during the colder months:

  • Tire Check: Tires are your first line of defense on icy or wet roads. Make sure your tires have at least 2/32” of tread depth (use a penny test to check). Keep them properly inflated, as cold air can cause tire pressure to drop. Consider switching to winter tires if you’re in an area prone to snow and ice.
  • Battery Test: Cold weather weakens car batteries, and a weak battery may leave you stranded. Have your battery tested to ensure it’s holding a charge. Clean any corrosion on the terminals and consider replacing batteries older than three years.
  • Windshield Wipers: Clear visibility is crucial in winter conditions. Replace old or streaky wipers, and fill your washer fluid reservoir with a winter-safe formula that won’t freeze in low temperatures.
  • Fluids and Oil: Check all your vehicle’s fluids, including engine oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, and transmission fluid. Ensure they’re at optimal levels and designed to perform well in cold weather. Low antifreeze levels can cause engine damage in freezing temperatures.
  • Emergency Kit: Always be prepared for the unexpected. Keep an emergency kit in your car with essentials like a blanket, flashlight, water, non-perishable snacks, jumper cables, a small shovel, an ice scraper, and a first aid kit. Add a phone charger and a bag of kitty litter or sand for traction if you get stuck.
  • Inspect Lights and Brakes: Shorter days and longer nights mean you’ll rely on your lights more than usual. Check that all headlights, brake lights, and turn signals are working. Ensure your brakes are in good condition to handle slick roads.
